City of York Mayor
John S. Brenner


John S. Brenner was elected the youngest Mayor of the City of York on November 6, 2001. He was sworn-in as the 23rd Mayor, January 7, 2002. Previously he served as the City Controller for two years.

Mayor Brenner served as the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute, a statewide nonprofit group, charged with educating elected officials and the public about fire and life safety issues, prior to becoming Mayor.

Involved in the community, Mayor Brenner serves on the Board of Directors of South George Street Community Partnership. He has served as a firefighter and executive officer of the Lincolnway Volunteer Fire Company; is an Eagle Scout, the highest award in scouting; he has served as a Second Class Petty Officer in the United States Naval Reserve; he is Executive Board Member of the York-Adams Area Council of Boy Scouts of America; founding member of the York Young Professionals; serves on the Board of Directors of the York County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. He serves on the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities Board and was the Board President in 2005. Mayor Brenner also serves on the Community Board of Directors of York County Economic Development Corp., Regional Economic Development District Initiative, Pennsylvania Local Government Investment Trust Board, Prevailing Wage Appeals Board and most recently was elected to the Board of the National League of Cities. He is a member of Christ Lutheran Church and in his spare time has taught swimming lessons to people of all ages.

Previously, Mayor Brenner served as staff assistant to the Lieutenant Governor and the chief of staff to a state senator. He is past president of Northeastern Jaycees.

Mayor Brenner was named as a 2003 Outstanding Young Pennsylvanian by the Pennsylvania Jaycees and “40 under 40” by the Central Penn Business Journal. He also received the 2005 Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence and the 2006 – York County Chamber of Commerce, Local Elected Official of the Year.

Mayor Brenner holds a Masters Degree in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Political Science from Lebanon Valley College. He is a native of Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania. He, his wife Adrienne, their son Sam and daughter Tipton reside in the City of York.
