(16) Co-Generation System

CO-GENERATION SYSTEM

At the plant, a Co-Generation facility was constructed and put on line in 1993. It is capable of producing 1530kwh of power using either utility natural gas or methane produced by the anaerobic digesters.

In 2009, 2,492,044 kilowatts of power were generated by this facility. This represented an annual cost saving of $211,800.

Various computer systems control the generators so that more power is generated during peak demand periods. When the electric utility cost are high, more power can be generated using this system to reduce our need for purchased electricity.

Heat is recovered from this system and is used to heat the anaerobic digesters and to warm buildings during the winter months

To date this system has saved an estimated $1,870,041 in electric energy costs. At the same time, the system utilized a "clean" fuel to generate the power.
