Holiday Safety
Tips for a Safe and Happy Holiday
This Holiday season, don’t let the spirit of giving lull you into giving burglars, muggers, and pickpockets a better chance to do their duty work.  Crooks love the holidays as mush as everyone else, but mainly because it’s an opportune time for crime.

If you're traveling:
· Get an automatic timer for your lights.
· Ask a neighbor to watch you home, shovel snow, and park in the driveway from time to time.
· Don’t forget to have mail and newspaper delivery stopped. If it piles up, it’s a sure sign you’re gone

If you're out for the evening:
· Turn on lights and a radio or TV so it looks like someone is home.
· Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave.
· Don’t display gifts where they can be seen from outside.

If you're shopping:
· Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
· Park in well lighted space, lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
· Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card whenever possible.
· Don’t overburden yourself with packages.  Be extra careful with purses and wallets.  Carry a purse close to you body, not dangling by the straps.
· If you are shopping with kids, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated.
Last but not least, don’t let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit.  Make time to get together with family, friends and neighbors.  Think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and helping someone who is less fortunate or lonely.  Do your part to make the holidays a safe and happy time for everyone-Except criminals!

Citizen's Police Academy
The City of York would like to thank all of the instructors and host for their generous contribution to the 14th Citizens Police Academy program.

The 14th Academy ended on May 14th, 2009 with a tour of the Police Heritage Museum followed by graduation and a reception at Trinity UCC Church.  Former alumni of the Academy assisted with hospitality and refreshments for this special evening.

Mayor John S. Brenner, Police Captains Roland Camacho and Wesley Kahley, instructors, graduates and their guests enjoyed a celebratory buffet to close out this positive experience.

Your support for our crime prevention programs is essential. We value your participation.
The York City Police Department offers a Citizen's Police Academy. This year's Police Academy has ended however please stay tuned to this page for more information about the next Citizen's Police Academy.

The program has been established to foster an open and knowledgeable working relationship between our York City community and its law enforcement officers. The academy will provide a wide range of information to familiarize private citizens with the nature and scope of law enforcement activity, our department policies and procedures, internal organization and structure.  Participants will be encouraged to ask questions, offer opinions and suggestions to improve services.

Sessions will include demonstrations  (QRT, NRT; evidence processing); lectures (police
Administrators and officers, Police Explorers, District Justice) and site visits (911-County Control,
Police Department, Community Policing Offices).  Upon completion of seven of the nine classes attendees will receive a diploma and qualify for a ride-along with a patrol officer.  All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

York City Police Thank Volunteers
Summer Bowling Program

On behalf of the Community Services Division, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers for all the time they spent with the 2009 Summer Bowling Program. This event could not have been a success without the help of the many volunteers who donated their time. During our summer months, we had significant positive encounters with over a thousand young people. We appreciate the time our volunteers spent with our City’s Youth.  Positive activities such as this really make a difference in the lives of youth in the City of York. None of this happens without your significant effort and hard work. Thanks again from all of us in Community Services.

Mark Your Calendars
27th Annual National Night Out

August 3, 2010

Mark your calendars now for the next National Night Out scheduled for August 3, 2010

Thanks to all those who made York’s 26th National Night Out (NNO) a huge success.

This year the York Housing Authority, Community Progress Council, Calvary U.M. Church, Eagle Ministries, Union Lutheran/Lehman Center, and New Hope Academy/Helping Hand, joined neighborhood associations for this community-building event. For the first time this year, Sovereign Bank Stadium joined NNO, with a total of 40 events held in the City.

Thank you to Buchart-Horn/Basco Associates and Target stores for all of their support, to all 120 volunteers who assisted with the neighborhood parties and to all of you who brought McGruff and Bee to National Night Out.

Thank you to Sgt. Brian Copenheaver, the deputies of the York County Sheriff’s Department, probation officers from York County Probation, the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services and York City Police CPO/USA Squad and Patrol Division. We appreciate the assistance of the Chaplains’ Corps, Dan White and all City employees.
National Night Out is an opportunity for our community to rally together to fight crime. Through NNO events, York City has been able to showcase our community pride and spirit.  National Night Out is a symbolic, nationwide crime prevention event that reflects the day in and day out cooperation of our citizens and police. It remains the cornerstone of our crime prevention efforts.

To all the residents of York City – YOU are the reason National Night Out works.

Bike Helmets Save Lives
York City Police Offer Bike Helmets
The York City Police Department reminds parents and caregivers who already have bikes or who are planning to buy bikes for children that the Police Department offers bike helmets. The bike helmets are being offered thanks to a grant from York County Community Foundation.

The Community Services Division of the Police Department also reminds parents and caregivers to make sure their children exercise bike safety and helmet safety year-round. He reminds parents to make sure that the child's helmet is worn correctly. For more information on how to wear a bike helmet correctly click here.

Helmets are required by law for children 12 and under in Pennsylvania.

York City Police also remind parents to check their helmets after they buy them to make sure that they haven't been recalled. Each helmet usually has a lot number inside the helmet. Use that lot number to go to the manufacturer and find uot if the helmet has been recalled.

For more information about bike helmet safety call Lt. Kevin Girling at 852-0604.
